Leadership IS All About You

I know you have probably heard that it isn’t about you but all about THEM. Them being employees, customers, shareholders, the owner, anyone, and anything but you.

I am sure you have experienced first-hand how this fake selflessness is playing out when it comes to “leadership.” Our days are full of people in “leadership” positions that are making it about anyone and anything but them. They are making excuses for their behavior, pointing fingers and blaming others, saying one thing and doing another, ignore what is happening, thinking about the short-term, not long term, and the list goes on and on.

Don’t you just want to yell at the top of your lungs, “Stop the insanity!” a la Susan Powter and then tell them to get it together.

Here’s the thing it is 100% about you as a leader and the choices you make.

It is time for little Simba to own the awesome responsibility it is to be a leader. Step up, act like a leader (and like an adult), own it, be it. It starts with you. You can’t make others (if only) but YOU can get it together. YOU. 

Some of you may be thinking,

“How do I do that when I haven’t had the best role models of good leaders?

I also struggle keeping plants alive!”

Stop with the excuses. Just stop. 

Here are three things to start getting it together as a leader people want to have:

  1. Each day ask yourself this question, “Would I work for me?” If the answer is no, change.
  2. Are leaders born or made? In my book, they are made. Continue to develop and grow your skills to take care of people.
  3. Conduct experiments with what you are learning. Did you learn How to WOW at Your Next Meeting? Did you give it a try? (I provided a handout that walks you through how to do it so no excuses click here to get it. ). Give it a try at your next meeting and see how it goes. Do the same with everything you learn.

I know some of you think you’ve got this. You may have been a “leader” for years, went to a mandatory leadership class earlier in the year, a big, expensive conference last year, read the latest book on leadership, or you may even have an MBA.

And you look after your people. You bought your team pizza a few weeks ago when you were working on a deadline, made cookies for a meeting, and got WiFi in the break room.

This morning I took a spin class. I was a sweaty mess. Is it realistic for me to think my pants are going to fit any better as a result of taking this one class? As those bad boys from Boston – Aerosmith – say, “Dream On.”

Same with developing leadership skills. It is not a one-time event. If it was that easy, everyone would be doing it and we would be surrounded by awesome leaders! You need to go to the spin class of leadership more than once or twice to get results.

In a world of instant gratification where I can get cupcakes delivered to me within 2 hours through Amazon Prime Now and the ability to get sucked into a Facebook or Instagram feed for 2 hours while I wait for them is not helping.

To become the leader you wish you had, a role model for future leaders, you need to make a choice to continue to grow, learn, and apply (and set a timer for social media use) and not be like everyone else because we know how many “leaders” make us feel every day. 

No matter if you are a new leader or experienced. Every day you have a choice.
